Wait a Second....

I have been monitoring the Emerald Viewer chat for the last 24 hours and have been amazed that the anger and grief being shown over the loss of Emerald. I to am sad to see this viewer go, and was angry at not only the Lab but Phox...Arabella and the like. But then I sat back and started to think. (Yes...this can be dangerous! :P) "Something is just not right here."

First, didn't Philip Linden say something about the SnowGlobe Project being be merged into
SnowStorm? Think back, at the key note speech at the SLCC, he did say that they were pushing forward with the SnowStorm project which means that Snowglob WILL EVENTUALLY be phased out.

Think about it, this only makes sense from a software and user perspective. When the Lab puts out new server software the viewer needs to be updated and usually is. What we have to ask ourselves is, how far is too far? When should a project be scrapped and redone from the bottom up? I am suspecting with SnowStorm, this is a complete start from scratch code.

Anyone out there who is an Apple user for more than a few years can remember when Apple changed their OS from 9.2 to 10.0. This was a radical change, very radical. Slicker interface, Unix system, better usability and the list can go on and on. Well, think of Emerald the old viewer as OS9.2. Yes we loved it and no...at first, we really don't want it to change. This is the same problem we are having with the new Viewe 2.0 and from my understanding even SnowStorm.

Now the new 2.0 viewer has a hideous UI. I do mean hideous. Not only that, but the usability is almost non-existent. The person who designed it SHOULD be shot.

It's buggy...I mean...I get bit by more bugs running 2.0 than I do fishing down at the swamp and there's no DEET to help you with these bugs. BUT it has new features that the old viewer doesn't have, and I am suspecting, isn't capable of handling which will eventually, make it obsolete.

Somehow, now bear with me because I am trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together, I have a feeling that the Emerald Dev Team was asked to move to the new code and they didn't want to. Now, I am VERY sure this is only part of the problem, but let's deal with one thing at a time. Anyway, This means dumping all the code you have worked long and hard on and then basically starting over again. A daunting task if you ask me.

Now, with the demand to go to the new viewer development, then the knowledge that the Lab wouldn't let Phox, Skills or Discrete be on the Emerald team, a decision, by the way, which I support 100%, I have a feeling that some of them felt that doing this would piss off enough residents (which it did) to incite them to a near virtual riot. So their thinking was; why don't we take advantage of that?

Well, congratulations Emerald Dev team, you did it but at the expense of your users. Now it will be a long time before any of us trust you, and I personally, will never trust Phox with anything he codes again. BUT that isn't the only thing I have a problem with, I am angry about the labs stand of Phox and his hacking:

[2010-03-18 16:43:32] Soft Linden: Nice!!!</ br>
[2010-03-18 16:43:41] Lonely <3: The OnyxKDU variant contains the other end of the cipher, and an exported function to retrieve said comment. </ br>
[2010-03-18 16:43:44] Soft Linden: I'd figured that library would be the place to hide things. So it shows up in their baked texture.</ br>
[2010-03-18 16:44:07] Lonely <3: Yup, Linux variants encode 128 characters of the path, since window title depends on window manager etc.</ br>
[2010-03-18 16:44:27] Lonely <3: I've got it nicely tied in to the radar here, it's fun to see the various names I get when all I see on people is a shiny emerald tag. </ br>
[2010-03-18 16:44:45] Soft Linden: I'd look at other places you might store that. We were at least planning to start encoding some info there to help us with DMCA takedowns</ br>

(The full conversation can be found here: From the Desk of Krisy B...)

While what they are doing, in essence CAN be used for going after people who copy in-world content, and I DO applaud that, my concern is why allow Phox do this kind of coding after his track record? I am gathering this is partially the reason for the change in rules for the TVP list. And yes, I support this too, especially after Phox is heard saying that he put in a channel spoofer in the last version of Emerald:

Some are saying that this was a joke. IMHO, this is something that just shouldn't be joked about. Integrity is paramount and whether this was done or not, should NOT have been said. While we're on the subject of integrity, Arabella's colors came through the wash, unfortunately, as one who's colors run. She seems to back some friends with honesty and others, well screw you. Why is your integrity fickle, Arabella? You told us you couldn't continue with being dishonest just before Fractured Left. What happened here?

This whole affair has left a bitter taste in my mouth and I am angered at the people on the Emerald team who selfishly put themselves over the users. The hell they have put us through, along with others on the outside who had a hand on this. I don't know the whole story on how this happened and somehow, I don't think we will ever get the full story, not to mention an honest one. I hope everyone involved can sleep with themselves at night then can look at themselves in the mirror. Somehow I think there are those who can, but shouldn't be.

In the meantime, I have changed to Kirsten's viewer and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of graphics, even at it's lowest setting is better than anything that Emerald had. I am hoping she will add all the toys I like about Emerald in the interim.

For further reading on the techie details of the new SnowStorm project and what it could mean for your viewing experience in Second Life, take a look at this blog:

The SecondLife Technologist

Well, That's all for now....when I find/get more info, I'll be more than happy to post it here.

Please feel free to post comments...I do have them moderated so no flaming please.

:D Kit

P.S.

Rumor has it that there will be some people banned over this...As much as I like the thought, somehow, Like Hazim and friends, I doubt this will last very long.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://kitsunesplace.blogspot.com/2010/09/emerald-viewer-banned-wait-second.html' title='Emerald Viewer Banned? SHAME on you PHOX!

Later Arabella sent out a notecard with clarifications from her Blog post on the Emerald website which stated this:

- Because there was no consensus amongst the developers about whether or not to comply with Linden Lab's requirement to remove three core developers, Lonely Bluebird offered to leave the Emerald project only if the team voted for this. Rather than wait for any kind of vote, a hostile takeover was attempted by a portion of the Dev Team trying to gain unauthorized access to the emerald servers without knowledge of the others (including me, the server owner).

- the vote eventually took place, with a minority even voting. This few that voted did not all vote in favour of removing Lonely Bluebird. The vote took place after the takeover failed, for forms sake

- Linden Lab has made it abundantly clear and in fact stated quite bluntly that they want Emerald numbers, which at this point in time number around 50% of total Second Life logins. These have been the stats for some months now.

- The primary issue that resulted in the demise of Emerald was the attempted and failed takeover of the project, far in advance of any requirements deadline set by Lindenlab. This hostile takeover was initiated by Jessica Lyon.

________________

This whole situation disgusts/frustrates me. Lonely/Phox....JUST LEAVE....Lonely..why piss off your users and prove that you should not be on the project? With this little stunt....you are proving what I felt all along....you should go with Fractured.

As for the Lab. The Lab is not seeing things clearly and is completely out of touch with their users. I will STILL not use their viewer regardless of their tech support telling me they won't support me if I don't. I PAY for their tech support and if they don't want to help me, well maybe my lawyer can help convince them otherwise. PHILIP your viewer sucks and causes too many problems on my computer. I WON'T USE IT.

I sincerely hope Jessica can pull a rabbit out of her hat and I hope she knows there are tons of people out there willing to help. :D

I am in shock so sorry if this post is somewhat disjointed....I just can't believe the Lab nor Phox. The lack of unprofessionalism from the both of them is apalling.

Holy Hexagon Batman!

I was noodling around the web the other day and happened to stop by one of my favorite websites; Daz3D. While I was looking through the new toys they had (finally a Bryce upgrade!) I noticed that they had an upgrade for Hexagon 2.0 to 2.5. The neat thing about this upgrade is that included sculptys. Yes, you heard right! Sculptys!

I upgraded my account to premium and bought a copy of that and my upgrade to Bryce 7.0 Pro. Downloading seemed like it took for ever,(ok...only a few minutes but still!) but when I finally got it, I installed that puppy as fast as I could. I opened it up the second that install was, all I could think was “wow”.

it isn’t that hard to figure out how to use, but then I have been using Blender, so I guess after that one anything would be easy to use. Hexagon has a tab called Second Life that has the available prims to model on.

I am still learning how to use it but I will be posing updates on my progress. If you are interested in seeing what any of the Daz products can do, head on over to their island at: Daz Island and see for yourself what their products can do in InWorldz or Second Life. Personally, as a user of their products since Bryce was 2.0 (ok...MetaCreations then to Daz now) I have been pleased with not only the price but the functionality of their products.

Tutorials are listed in their forums and can be found here: Daz Forum

I haven’t had as much time lately as I would like to play with it....but what I have done is impressive. I liek that I can pain textures on my sculpty right inside the program, or if I want, I can make UV textures like in Blender and port them over to photoshop and make my textures there. The possibilities are endless and I look forward to getting to know this program well. When time permits, I will be working in Hexagon and I hope to post some tutorials up here soon.

Well, got some homework to do then Hexagon to play with...TTYL!

Emerald Gets a Reprieve....For Now.

Emerald got some good news the other day. Linden Labs has offered a stay of execution by giving Emerald a list of requirements that need to be met. (The post can be found here.)

While we wait for the list of requirements to be published, I do have a few questions for the Lab:

You have asked Emerald not to use the emkdu.dll and llkdu.dll files, will you be requiring other viewers to not use these files as well? With these files being closed source, I think there is a greater risk for abuses if they are allowed to remain in the viewers. the only option I see for the Lab is to require the no one use this file, even them. there is no way for us as users to check their code to verify that it has been tampered with.
What will the Lab do to make sure that there is more transparency with the viewer loading page? I feel that this is something that all viewers should be required to comply with..I personally would like to be able to right click on the page and have a view source option available.
WHY IS LINDEN LABS LISTENING TO A HACKER/GRIEFER who’s story changes by the hour, sounding worse and worse just so he can draw more sympathy for his cause? Why have you not cut off all communication with him, especially if you have supposedly perma-banned him and his partner? WHY ARE YOU GUYS GIVING HIM ANY CREDENCE? Why haven’t you done something before this incident to make sure this private war didn’t happen?( I will cover this story later...I have been writing it but don’t have it done yet. :S)

These are questions that have plagued me for a while now, even before this whole “Emeraldgate”. In my opinion, I feel that Linden Labs is equally to blame for the events of the last few weeks. They knew that there was a situation on the rise, yet but did little or nothing to stop it. Talk about dancing with the devil.

I did like though that the Lab attended a show called “Can 3rd party Viewers be Dangerous? I did listen to what the LAB had to say but in my opinion was only a defense of Philip Linden’s post/email on Tuesday regarding the removal of Emerald from the TPV list. Yes, that whole scenario was handled poorly. It could have been handled better:

Philip should have gotten with the Emerald Team BEFORE removing them from the TPV and discussed their problem then. It would have been nice if both Emerald and the Lab could have come to an agreement on the removal of Emerald until they got the viewer to compliance then JOINTLY put out statements explaining the situation. Instead, Emerald was removed Sunday with many users as well as the Emerald support team wondering what was going on and it wasn’t until tuesday that Philip decided to let us know what was going on.

In conclusion, I just feel that the Lab handled this whole situation poorly. The lack of credibility of their informant should be taken into consideration as well as communications with him should be entirely severed. As for the Emerald team...It is nice to see that their hard work over the weekend had not been in vain. I am hoping that they will also sever all communications with this griefer as he is griefing under a different guise. We the users are tired of being in the middle of this battle and consumer wise, this is not going to be good for the Lab nor Emerald.

I am looking forward to see what happens between Emerald and the Lab. Hopefully, it will be something that can benefit their users no matter what viewer the user chooses. In the meantime, I am still looking at my virtual world options.

Philip Linden Looking to Boost Viewer 2.1?

O.K. what little respect I had for Philip Linden today is now gone. He has a pathetic viewer that has more bugs than a boy scout camp-out and is virtually useless unless you are a noob or don't plan to build yet he tries to boost his user base by posting this message on their blogs and sending users this email:

Malicious Viewers and Our Third-Party Viewer Policy

It amazes me that Linden Labs would resort to this kind of tactic just so they can get more users. I has to make one wonder how bad the statistics are for their viewer that would make Philip not only post this message to a blog but send out emails to the users. Are they that desperate to maintain control that they would skew the unfortunate events behind the scenes of a viewer that is used by the majority of Second Life just to they can maintain control?

Along with the last question I have a few more:
- If they are so intent on keeping out malicious viewers, why did it take Second Life so long to get Neil Life out of Second Life?

- Why isn't the code for all viewers that log on to Second Life being examined if they are worried about their users?

- If they are worried about malicious Code in SL then why don't they shut down code like this site offers?

-Are all "malicious" viewers out of Second Life?

With the things that have been going on lately in Second Life, the drama, the garbage, it is enough for me to consider other worlds.

I am already in OpenSim where I have 42 sims that cost me nothing but the electricity to run the server. I have looked at InWorldz and to be quite honest with you, it is looking better and better to me all the time because it lacks the drama and hell that Linden Labs seems to love to put their users through.

While I understand that it is hard to make sure that people don't log in to Second Life not copybot other creator's content, I don't think Linden Labs have a good enough grasp on the problem or any of their problems. They need to concentrate their energies in other areas and not in a voice change option in their viewer or display names.

Because of this action by Philip Linden on behalf of Linden Labs this raises a whole new set of concerns for people who are developers of viewers out there:

- If your viewer is better than Linden Labs, will you have to make sure you don't make ANY mistakes because even a bug could mean that Linden Labs will close you down?

- How much of your personal Second Life verses your professional Second Life will you as a developer need to keep seperate?

-If you manage to get some ex-lindens to help you with your viewer...will you need to watch your back?

There are some things I would like to see changes in the viewer community though:
- It would be nice if they let us know what the different connections were doing and where they were going to. Emerald has had people upset before for <a href-"http://alphavilleherald.com/2010/05/emerald-site-security-broken-data-mining-shocks-linden-lab.html" target="_blank"> mining information, so it would be nice if viewers would let people know up front what information is being collected and how it is being used.

- If you are a developer for a viewer, and you have a checkered past, for Pete's sake don't release your viewer to everyone or if you do, at least let people know what you did and make sure you don't let the past and present worlds meet. Ever.

-Think of your users. These are the people who will make or break you. Linden Labs has not learned this lesson but the least you as a developer, should learn from their mistakes.

I am very disappointed in Philip Linden and his actions today. I know that Jessica Lyon and many others has worked their butts off for Emerald these past few days and I In view of the radical changes that Emerald has gone through in the past few days, the least Philip could have done is not made that post nor sent that email to users, but let the community know that they are working with Emerald to resolve the situation to everyone's satisfaction as soon as possible. I would have had much more respect for Philip if he had.

Because of Philip, I will be looking at other virtual world solutions more seriously. My blog's name will change (although not the content) and I will offer more infromation that I find in other worlds.

I am seeing that even though Philip is back, it is still business as usual--->Screw the users...Linden Labs comes first.

P.S. Philip...I sill haven't gotten my email. Scared?

Please excuse the dust....

Sorry folks I need to get this page worked out...I am tired of it not being exactly the way I want it and I do plan on adding many more posts so I decided to work on it today. Unfortunately, much of this has been blown completely out of proportion especially when the viewer was taken off of Second Life's Third Party Viewer Directory.

Messages such as this one went viral over the grid within minutes:

********* ENGLISH **********
Those who now are using the client Emerald, Modular Systems, please remove it from the PC and install an alternate client, with the recommendation to change their password as soon as possible since Emerald is * no longer on the list of clients approved by Linden Lab* and its use will soon become a crime, not to mention that is a danger to your safety and privacy online.
Here the viewer .. Secondlife accept that .. http://viewerdirectory.secondlife.com/
OR download from the Viewer ORIGINAL
*WIN Viewer 1*

Or my favorite one about emerald users being banned at 12:00p.m.:

Those who now are using the client Emerald, Modular Systems, please remove it from the PC and install an alternate client, with the recommendation to change their password as soon as possible since Emerald is * no longer on the list of clients approved by Linden Lab* and its use will soon become a crime, not to mention that is a danger to your safety and privacy online.

(The 12:00p.m. was added later by some idiot for effect! :-P)

But I digress. Let me tell you what I have found in my research on this matter and what I have seen over the past few weeks in the Emerald group:

The Bug
The code that was there was to make the viewer load images faster it is called emdku.dll. this is a CLOSED source code. It wasn't intentionally malicious.. but it did have a bug that could show the entire directory of where emerald was installed and if it was installed on the desktop of a computer....it could possibly show the name of the user. *NO...this bug DIDN'T steal your password". This bug was an issue only on some OS's....not all. As a result, Emerald told their users several weeks ago to stop using the viewer I do believe it was the 2439 beta that they said had "security issues".

Evidently Fractured didn't remove the code after being asked to by other devs and that is partially what got him in trouble. The other problem is that the other devs didn't care for it that only Fractured had access to all the code (And the code with the bug especially because it was licensed to him and only him ) thereby making it difficult for the other developers to do checks and make sure that sneaky or unethical things weren't being done without the other dev's consent. ( Read more here: http://lordgreggreg.wordpress.com/2010/08/22/past-present-future/)

Griefer Wars
The DDoS....well it wasn't actually a DDoS...more like harrassment. To do a good DDoS you need to have a trojan horse that is installed on many computer systems (called bots) that people have no idea are on their computers, continually hammering a site with packets making the server unable to handle the continual request for information which eventually shuts it down.

What happened with Fractured Crystal was that he put some code in the web page that the viewer uses for the load screen.. this would request images on the server that COULD potentially cause problems with the server...but Hazim (The guy who was attacked) claims that in a two week period he did have only a terrabyte of usage. (This can be found on the SLU forum). Evidently ,we the users, got in the middle of a personal griefer war but without the balls to do anything really harmful like a true DDoS attack would do.

This method by no means, is enough to shut down a server... slow it down... maybe....and using images in this way is common practice and done all the time over the internet. Most web developers will put in a script that will prevent this kind of "hot linking" keeping this kind of bandwidth usage down therefore keeping these hits from falsely bloating their stats. There is not enough Emerald users to create a server meltdown....just be a bug in the ointment at best.

What now?
While I to am concerned that Fractured Crystal allowed this to get this bad before resigning from Emerald....I have been in the group long enough to see what has happened over the past few weeks and know for the most part... everyone there wants SL users to have a better experience in SL . These issues we have now alone are not enough to make me quit using their viewer. They did tell us in the group...that there were problems with one of the viewers and to go back to another viewer until they could get it resolved... (this was after Lordgreggreg left which I am guessing for the reasons I mentioned above).

I applaud Lordgreggreg for his integrity as well as Arabella Steadham for also quitting when her integrity was asked to be compromised for something this unethical. To me it is amazing that she then took up the reigns when a leader was needed at Emerald. The rest of the Emerald Viewer group needs to have a pat on the back for forcing Fractured to leave and putting up with the aftermath of Fractured's gross errors in judgement.

No.. I am not necessarily a fan of Emerald as I do have many viewers on my computer....but I do hate it when people jump to conclusions without getting their fact straight first. I have followed this for a while now and I have seen many things as well as have talked to many people about this incident...most of this is garbage and people just don't have information to back up their claims. There isn't many of them that have even bothered to find out what was going on so they could make a decision from there.

If you are really concerned about security, then make sure you have a good firewall on your computer. Zone Alarm is great for windows and I use Little Snitch for my mac. You can also use packet sniffers and other tools that can track what processes are being used on your system, what ports are open...etc.. and the good news is most of them are free.

Last but not least....you SHOULD be changing you password in SL on a regular basis anyway and I would recommend doing it at least every few months. Make your passwords hard with caps, lowercase letters, and numbers with no characters repeated. Even though Emerald's emkdu.dll file didn't record your password...there are other sites on the net that can from time to time harvest that kind of information from the cookies you have on your computer. It is ALWAYS good practice to change you password and do it often.

In conclusion, I am not happy at all that Fractured didn't leave sooner than this and that he has caused so many people grief over his foolish actions. Emerald is a good viewer and should not be thrown to the curb just because of his lack of common sense. So please, take the time to research the facts before you do make a decision. I think the Emerald team did what they could/had to under the circumstances and did an excellent job. If you are still worried about Emerald's security....then just sit back and see what Emerald does in the next few weeks/months. After all, "it will all come out in the wash" as the saying goes.

Links:

- Fractured Crystal's resignation
- LordGregGreg's Blog
- Arabella Steadham's blog
- Hazim Gazov's post on actual web site useage
- Jessica Lyon and Arabella Steadham interview on treet.tv
- Emerald's new website and more update information in the forums

When a Request for Role Play Areas in Second Life Gets Hijacked by forum Troll

Recently in the Second Life forum there was a post asking for a list of role play sims in Second Life. She has made a "hit list" of sims she plans to take down including Tombstone and Doggie Jigsaw's New Mexico, Arizona Canyons & Western Prairie sims just to name a few. Neither of these sims portray Native Americans in a negative light. Tombstone is run by a chief who is Navajo and Doggie's sim has a woman of native Ancestry but isn't "Native" enough for Nany.

She is also promoting misinformation of the Native American by twisting history to the way she wants to see it. She states:

"The mid 1800's was an era of intense ethnic cleansing in North America. American Indians were slaughtered in the millions and the survivors of the genocide were forced into concentration camps where they starved. Pretending to be one of those survivors, dressing up in a mock representation of their appearance using distortions of their religion and customs is a very popular activity in Second Life

If it is acceptable to Linden Lab to role play American Indian survivors of genocide, why shouldn't it be ok to pretend to be a Jewish vicitm of the Holocaust in a concentration camp? Many people would probably enjoy pretending to be one of the chosen people of God being victimized by racists, singing klezmer tunes and dancing around a fire in dirty striped pajamas in an auschwitz-style camp, talking in a mock Yiddish accent."

She forgets the Battle of Little Big Horn, the many Pioneers that lived in terror when Native Americans went attacking (I have journals of my grandfather and the terror he and his family went through because of Native Americans)..To me...that whole era is rampant with things that BOTH sides did. No our government isn't totally blameless and no I don't like what they did but that is history and trying to paint it in a light that the US government was all in the wrong is absurd. Trying to take this history and regurgitate it into Second Life in a light that make one side look better than the other is reprehensible.

Another thing that bothers me is the blatant racism and disregard for American laws in her rants. No one is Native enough for her. Yikes! (I am getting a faint smell of Naziism).

"Those urban "Indians" you mention are either enrolled in a federally recognized tribe, or they are not Indians. This teaches tolerance, history, and can give a valuable insight to something you may not have had the opportunity to do otherwise. This kind of Role-play can keep traditions that have been passed down for generations from being forgotten from memory and from our culture. The short-sighted and narrow-minded views that she portrays seems to be a reflection of the Nazi era and smells of Aryan Nation stink.
